Blue Mountain Zendo has always tried to accommodate dedicated students. Yet we also hold fast on the stern requirements for full membership that our zendo has always adhered too. Rinzai Zen is not a hobby. With this being said, everyone is welcomed, and no-one is pressed into any of the various "pathless paths." Formost, you are not required to be a monk to practice deep Zen. Just a burning desire to know the truth.

1. Associate membership (no requirements)
2. Jukai postulate (no more than four missed consecutive sits)
3. Jukai member (no more than four missed consecutive sits)
4. Postulate (only miss: work, sickness, a vacation - 2 years)
5. Tokudo (more leeway, yet only miss the above three)

Tomorrow, on March 19th, from 6:30-8:30pm, we will be offering zazen at our Lehigh Valley Location in Bethlehem. Beginners are encouraged to attend Tuesday evenings, as they are geared towards new students or those interested in just observing before partisipating in the practice. Tuesday evenings offer a structured, yet relaxed exploration of traditional Rinzai Zen Practice. Blue Mountain Zendo is not a hybrid center or "new age" center. We adhere to the fundamental spirit of Rinzai Zen, with a focus on koan work, zendo etiquette and zazen (meditation with a specific point of focus). Rinzai Zen is hard work, in return, it clarifies our lives and reveals a transformative process which has been transmitted by "teacher to student" for thousands of years. How bad do you need to know the truth?

Bodhidharma’s Definition Of Zen Practice

“A special transmission outside the scriptures; Not depending upon words and letters; Directly pointing at the mind-heart of man; Seeing into one’s nature and attaining Buddhahood.”

Zen Practice is the skin, bone and marrow of the Buddha’s teaching. It cuts through the vines and briars which have long entangled us.

As Bodhidharma pointed out, Zen is not based on intellectual pursuits, and is unattainable to those who attempt to understand it via mere sophism. However, some will push forward with tenacity and perseverance, and these students will realize the wondrous joy of the Dharma. Zen Practice is for those who must know the truth, and are willing to push through the many obstacles that are the catalysts to awakening.
